Oct 29-31, Tues-Thurs {A} Midweek Trail Clearing on the North Shore. We’ll be clearing ski trails and staying at lodges or cabins in the Cascade River area. These are classic ski trails that will be machine-groomed in winter. Our sponsor, the Norpine Ski Trail Association, has housing committed for up to 27 volunteers. Norpine would like to give NSSTC “first opportunity” to register for the midweek trail clearing; however, they will soon send invitations to Norpine members to ensure that they have 27 volunteers registered and ready to work.
North Stars: please register as soon as possible before the volunteer spots are given away to non-NSSTC folks. To register, mail a signed Reservation and Waiver form plus a $25/person deposit check (made payable to Fran Howley) to Fran at 5753 Pillsbury Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55419. Your check will be returned when you arrive at your lodging.
Be prepared to hike up to 5 or 6 miles clearing brush, sawing small branches with loppers or a hand saw, and sawing branches overhanging the trail. Arrive at your assigned lodging location by Tuesday evening, Oct 29. After breakfast on Wednesday, a full workday is planned, and a half day of work on Thursday prior to departure. Hand tools will be provided, including hard hats and safety eyewear. All meals will be provided, including sack lunches at noon on the trail and a dinner upon returning from the trail Wednesday evening.
The North Star Ski Touring Club encourages carpooling for conservation of fuel. Fuel reimbursement will be 100% for drivers carrying two or more passengers, and 50% for drivers carrying one passenger. Because we are sharing rooms and meals, and some volunteers are riding together, everyone on the trip must be vaccinated for Covid-19.
